THE SHADOW OF A GUNMAN
Debra Miller of Phindie says:
"Under the astute and sensitive direction of Peggy Mecham (with dialogue and scene coaching by John Gallagher), the IHT's skillful cast of eleven brings depth and nuance to these flawed but irresistible, and consummately Irish, characters and their struggles, delivering the humor and humanity of their roles in convincing Irish accents.
The lead actors are supported by a fully engaged ensemble, with not a weak link among them."

The first part of O'Casey's "The Dublin Trilogy". Set in 1920, as the War of Independence rages, "Shadow of a Gunman" is the story of two men, Donald & Seamus who share a flat in Dublin.

Donal Davoren is a poet who has come to room with Seumas Shields in a poor, Dublin tenement slum.  The comedy is classic O'Casey as he looks at the lives of the poor Irish whose struggle to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table is more immediate than the struggle for a Free Ireland.

Many of the residents of the tenement mistake Donal for an IRA volunteer (a gunman on the run). Donal does not refute this notoriety, especially when it wins him the affection of Minnie Powell, an attractive young woman in the tenement.  But Dublin in 1920 is no place to pretend to be a gunman - the bullets and the bombs are real enough.

The first O'Casey play to be done by the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, "Shadow of a Gunman" will make you laugh until you cry.
