In the Kingdom of Ice
An Evening With Award-Winning Author Hampton Sides
In the late 19th century, people were obsessed by "Arctic Fever". No one knew exactly what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans but it was crystal clear that glory would be bestowed on the country whose flag was first planted at the North Pole. Stupendously wealthy James Gordon Bennett, owner of the New York Herald had recently dispatched Stanley to find Livingston. Now, keen to capture world attention on an even grander scale, Bennett funded an official U.S. naval expedition to the Pole and on July 8, 1879, Captain George Washington De Long and 32 men set sail from San Francisco aboard the U. S. S. Jeannette. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached and the Jeannette sank to the bottom of the Arctic Ocean. Marooned, nearly a thousand miles north of Siberia with only the barest of supplies, the men battled furious storms, madness and starvation on their treacherous march across the frozen sea. Their story ranks as one of the greatest struggles for survival in modern history.
