RAICES FLAMENCAS: ¡FEED YOUR PASSION!

In our first official collaboration with the new and delectable India Joze, The 418 Project presents Raices Flamencas, a gustatory, dance and musical journey.

Flamenco, that burning expression of outcasts transcending their suffering, emerged in the form we recognize today from Andalusia, Spain during the nineteenth century. But its roots reach much further back. Centuries earlier than the originally Indian gypsies arrival in the 1400s, Arab Moors and Sephardic Jews were adding their artistry to a uniquely Andalusian stew. The 1492 outlawing of these three groups by Christian conquerors forced them undercover--often together in mountain caves--and so kindled a three century slow-cooking of the flamenco we savor today.
The 418 Project brings accomplished local and Bay Area artists from these various traditions for you to relive that story and witness flamenco growing to a borderless future.

Featuring Ladino singer, Kat Parra; Odissi and Classical Indian dancer, Revital Carroll; Moroccan musicians, Fattah Abbou and Mohamed Aoualou from the band Aza; and Rubina Valenzuela & students with Diana Alejandre and live accompaniment by guitarists RIcardo Diaz.
