SESSION AMERICANA (Boston) is a rock band in a tea cup, or possibly a folk band in a whiskey bottle. This band/collective of talented musicians craft an musical experience unlike any other. On stage is a collapsible bar table wired with microphones, a vintage suitcase recast as a kick drum, an old Estey field organ, a pre-war parlor guitar, a mandocello and all of its smaller siblings, a harmonica case fire damaged when Jack's bar went up in flames and graffitied by Depeche Mode roadies, and an assortment of other instruments that get passed around in this freewheeling modern hootenanny. The anything-could-happen feel of a Session show depends on craft that's not accidental or easilywon; they bring a kind of ease and genuineness to this timeless music, sometimes presenting the latest batch of original songs, sometimes reaching back into depths of the American "song bag".
JEFFERSON HAMER started out performing as guitarist, singer, and songwriter in the Colorado-based Americana ensembles Great American Taxi and the Single Malt Band. He relocated to New York in 2008 and became immersed in the traditional music scene. His most recent album is Child Ballads, released in 2013 on Wilderland Records. A painstaking, contemporary American reworking of seven of Professor Francis James Child's venerable 19th century English and Scottish Popular Ballads, this record was arranged and performed in close duo collaboration with acclaimed singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell. The album earned a BBC2 Folk Award in the Best Traditional Track category, and was named one of NPR's top-ten Folk and Americana releases of 2013 ("their tight harmonies and lyrical edits turned these centuries-old songs into contemporary gems" -NPR). His other release from 2013, The Murphy Beds, is an acoustic collaboration with Dublin-born musician Eamon O'Leary. Featuring ten American and Celtic-influenced folk songs, sung harmony duet-style, and decorated with intricate guitar and bouzouki accompaniment, The Murphy Beds creates a contemplative space where musical composition and arrangement converge with the deep Irish and American traditions. The Huffington Post said it succinctly: "The resulting album bears repeated listening from start to finish, with ten beautiful, crystalline songs."
DIETRICH STRAUSE
The new album "Little Stones to Break the Giant's Heart" stands tall, supported by a backbone of melodies and lyrics diligently crafted by Strause. The songs are a comfortable and careful mix of journeys, clever literary references, and striking imagery. Strause's songs are versatile personal, but universal enough to hook the masses. If the songs are the backbone, then the musicians Strause assembled are the blood that brings it to life. To record "Little Stones to Break the Giant's Heart", Dietrich teamed up with producer and guitarist Austin Nevins (Aoife O'Donovan, Josh Ritter) and a group of his longtime collaborators, an outfit of New England's finest Americana and folk musicians.
