St John Passion by JS Bach
London Docklands Singers Spring Concert
Come and listen to the choir perform Bach's St John Passion.
This Passion or oratorio documents the short, final period in the life of Jesus covering his visit to Jerusalem and leading to his execution by crucifixion.
It was written during Bach's first year as director of church music in Leipzig and is the older of two surviving Passions by Bach. It was first performed on April 7, 1724 at Good Friday Vespers at the St. Nicholas Church.
The structure of the work fall in two halves, intended to flank a sermon. The work is compiled from recitatives and choruses narrating the Passion of Christ as told in the Gospel of John.
St John Passion has been described as extravagant, with an expressive immediacy, at times more unbridled and less "finished."
