A poetry slam is a competition between poets performing original work judged by members of the audience. The content and styles are as diverse as the people of our great city.

Top finishers in the grand slam will represent The Pigeon and Philadelphia at the National Poetry Slam!

Come perform, watch or judge.

Poets wishing to compete should arrive at 8:30 to put their names in the hat. All poets who put their name in the hat pay half price. At 9:00 poets names will be picked out of the hat.

The Pigeon* is excited to announce this month's feature and workshop** leader:

DASAN AHANU

is a public speaker, organizer, workshop facilitator, poet, spoken word performer, educator, songwriter, writer, emcee, and loyal Hip Hop head born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. In addition to performing, Dasan has hosted many poetry, jazz, Hip Hop, and cultural arts events across the state. He is one of the founders of Black Poetry Theatre (BPT) where he has been a writer, director, producer, and cast member in most of their productions. As an active participant in poetry slam, Dasan has competed regionally and nationally as a founding member and coach of Durham, NC's own Bull City Slam Team. Dasan is also a recording artist who as one as one half of the duo The Jim Crow Jackson Experiment released a self titled album domestically and internationally in 2007. Since then he has continued to record while collaborating with many of North Carolina's most notable emcees, vocalists, and musicians. Dasan is a proud member of the Universal Zulu Nation, a global community organization that also fosters greater cultural awareness of Hip Hop.
