Metro Mambo presents: Sping - African American Intersections with Latin Jazz
Film and Food are both on the menu as the FREE "Metro Mambo" Latin-jazz lecture/concert series continues with "SPING (Spanish+Swing)," an afternoon of film clips highlighting African-American intersections in Latin jazz. The selected video clips will offer insights on the cross-cultural impact of Latin jazz and mambo, particularly how the popular explosion of Latin music in the mid-20th century led African-Americans to reconnect with African rhythms.

Arrive early at 1:00 p.m. and enjoy a fresh, savory 'Cuban Sandwich' available for purchase at NURISH Food+Drink. the screening will begin at 2:00 p.m in the black box theater. Tickets are FREE but must be reserved in advance.

This event is produced and moderated by Jim Byers, host of WPFW 89.3 FM's "Latin Flavor Classic Edition. Called "a creative gem on Washington airwaves" by The Washington Post, Jim Byers has hosted The Latin Flavor Classic Edition for 19 years on WPFW 89.3 FM, programmed from his private collection of 18,000 vintage recordings. Singled out as one of the shows which led Washington City Paper to laud WPFW 89.3 FM's entire Sunday line-up as DC's "Best Weekend Radio." For more than two decades, Byers has lectured on Latin jazz for several organizations, including the Kennedy Center, George Mason University and the Smithsonian Institution, which presented Byers' production of his 'Metro Mambo' series for the last five years. While the 'Metro Mambo' Series continues independently, Mr. Byers likewise continues to offer programming through the Smithsonian Latino Center for Hispanic Heritage Month and other Smithsonian activities.
