BLOODLINE If love is what we're all longing for, then why does it feel so difficult to receive? We invite you to witness ten performers use street dance, spoken word, and song, unearthing the most intimate workings of their hearts, in an attempt to better understand our shared emotional reality. Drawing from love in all its forms - familial, romantic, esoteric, and abstract - "Bloodline" fuses process and performance highlighting the symbiotic nature of vulnerability and self-empowerment. "Bloodline" is the manifestation of the belief that self-healing is the most important step towards social change and a shift in global consciousness.
Nicole Klaymoon/ Embodiment Project is fiscally sponsored by La Pena Cultural Center and is a recipient of the 2009 Zellerback Grant and Ford Foundation funding. NKEP performed their first original work, "Bloodline," at the Left Coast Leaning Festival at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and at the Crucible Fire Arts Festival, collaborating with renowned vocalists d. Sabela Grimes aka Ovasoul7. Klaymoon has performed in works directed by Rennie Harris, Mark Bamuthi-Joseph, and Meridith Monk. She presented original dance works internationally including two evening length pieces, "The Sixth Vowel", which showcased at Miami Project Hip-Hop and Hop-Hop Theater festival New York and DC, UC Riverside, Philadelphia, and excerpts at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. Klaymoon also hosts "The Rebirth," a weekly street dance event sponsored by La Pena Cultural Center and the Ford Foundation, and offers weekly workshop classes at ODC dance school. La Pena's support of NKEP is significant, for as an organization with an established record serving the arts community since 1975, it continues to back artists whose specific goal is to explore innovative aesthetics and address controversial social issues. www.embodimentproject.org
Amara Tabor-Smith is the former Associate Artistic Director and dancer with The Urban Bush Women Dance Company of New York City. In 2006 she formed her company Deep Waters Dance Theater (DWDT) with a mission of presenting work that addresses issues of race, culture, spirituality and the environment in an effort to inspire social change. DWDT is currently an artist in residence at CounterPULSE in San Francisco. Amara was a 2007 recipient of the CHIME mentorship exchange grant.
Valerie Troutt has completed a year long run as an artist-in-residents at the Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco and performing on the jazz stage for the Best of East Bay Express party 2009. In the summer of 2008 Valerie became the youngest member of the Grammy nominated Oakland based a cappella ensemble Linda Tillery Cultural Heritage Choir. myspace.com/valerietroutt
