10 Week Scenework Class

Whatever the improv show, at the heart is the scene, and this course is ten weeks getting right to the core of how to make a great scene. Learn to observe and engage deeply with your scene partner, allowing the scene to emerge organically from the connection. Make life easy for yourself by not inventing, just playing what is already there as hard as you can.
Leading to a rich and complex form of scenework which richer than comedy, but funny as well, this course is designed for people who have done some improvisation already and want to hone this one particular area of their performance.
Over this ten week course, you will cover areas including observing and adding, truth, holding on to a point of view, using the environment. All in a small class and with close personal feedback.
At the end of the course, you will have a practical tool belt of of techniques that can be used in any scene in any show or class, an awareness of how scenework and character works.
Cumulates in a short performance at the Nursery.

What is it?
A class all about making scenes, characters and connections. Working towards a deep, rich form of theatrical improvisation, based on discovery rather than invention. Come make life easier for yourself while still leaping on the fun! Using techniques from the world of acting as well as improvisation, you will work on rhythm, physicality, emotion and point of view to create characters, then learn techniques to combine it all into a show!

What will I get out of it?
At the end of this course, you will have a clear and practical way of looking at character and relationship, be more able to create scenes without the support of game structures. You will be more relaxed and present onstage and therefore more responsive to the needs of your partner and the show. And that makes everything easier and more enjoyable for you, your partner and the audience!

Who is it for?
This course is designed for people who have done some improvisation before. If you are totally new to improvisation, you may want to come to some of our Saturday drop in sessions.

Who is teaching it?

Jules Munns is the Artistic Director of the Nursery and improvises regularly with the Maydays and Ten Thousand Million Love Stories. He has also performed with Music Box, the Improsarios, the London 50-hour improvathon, the Spontaneity Shop and many other companies. He trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and then with many international improvisation gurus, including Keith Johnstone, Patti Stiles, Jason Chin, Bill Arnett, PGraph, Susan Messing and Rachel Mason.
