Design of Deep Water Pontoon Mooring Anchors for the SR520 Floating Bridge & Landings Replacement Project
Red Lion Hotel
Bellevue, WA
Compartir este evento

The SR520 Floating Bridge & Landings Replacement Project is a design-build project that is currently replacing the existing SR520 Floating Bridge to increase traffic capacity and to meet current design requirements. Upon completion, the proposed structure will be the longest floating bridge in the world, consisting of 23 floating primary concrete pontoons fixed in place by 58 large anchors. The anchorage system is comprised of three different anchor types: fluke, gravity, and drilled shaft, each tailored to their unique locations and subgrade conditions. The three anchor types are all designed to resist a maximum pontoon cable load of 1140 kips. Hart Crowser and KPFF had the unique opportunity to bring creative solutions to designing these large anchors in extremely difficult soil conditions with complicated construction limitations and unparalleled capacity demands. Hart Crowser and KPFF worked integrally with the design-build contractor (Kiewit/General/Manson joint venture) and the owner (Washington State Department of Transportation) to develop recommendations that reduced cost and uncertainty while improving the performance and reliability of the anchorage system.

Ben Upsall is an Associate Geotechnical Engineer with Hart Crowser in Seattle, WA. Ben received his BS in Geological Engineering from Colorado School of Mines in 2002 and his MSE in Geotechnical Engineering from University of Washington in 2004. Ben has over 10 years of professional experience focusing largely on the design and management of design-build transportation, infrastructure, waterfront, commercial development, and abandoned mine land reclamation projects.

Tripp Howard is a professional structural engineer with more than 16 years of experience in the structural design, inspection, and repair of numerous waterfront, industrial, commercial, and transportation related structures. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Institute of Steel Construction. Mr. Howard is currently a senior structural engineer with KPFF, a consulting engineering firm in Seattle Washington that provides project management, planning, civil & structural engineering, machinery design, and construction management on a wide range of project types through all stages of development
