After an evening spent at the local pub, Christopher Sly rents the DVD of The Taming of a Shrew to watch at home with his wife, a movie that is advertised as being a good lesson for married men. The movie he watches becomes the action of the play, with Slys wife moving from the real world to step into the role of Katharina, the titular shrew. Katharinas mother Baptista will not allow any of her children to be married before Katharina, who is the eldest. However, no one seems to want to marry her, since she's known far and wide as an intolerable shrew. Enter Petruchio, a man who claims to be able to tame her and transform her into the perfect wife...by any means necessary.
CONTENT WARNINGS: Verbal abuse, gaslighting, threats of violence, rude gestures, physical intimacy. While there is no explicit language and minimal explicit content, use discretion if bringing younger children.
ABOUT THIS YEAR'S BENEFICIARY
All proceeds from this production will be donated directly to Keep Our Clinics (https://keepourclinics.org/), a national initiative sponsored by the Abortion Care Network to keep independent reproductive care clinics open across the nation, especially in places that are most threatened by the SCOTUS ruling that removed our constitutional protections. Small, community-based clinics rely on individuals and communities to keep their doors open - they often dont have the financial support, name recognition, and fundraising ability of national health centers or hospitals. Marketing is limited, and fundraising is typically at the local or grassroots level, mainly from small donors. The Keep Our Clinics campaign provides funding to independent clinics to cover tangible expenses like increased security, building repairs, legal fees, and community education and advocacy.
ABOUT THE PLAY
Discourse surrounding William Shakespeares ostensible comedy The Taming of the Shrew is...complicated. When people think of the play, they seem to think fondly of the 90's film adaptation 10 Things I Hate About You, or they focus on that famous scene in Act 2 in which Kate and Petruchio meet for the first time. Admittedly, it's a great scene, a brilliant setpiece of back and forth banter, genuinely funny and full of deliciously sexy puns, an early spark of genius by a largely untested playwright, since this was one of Shakespeares earliest plays. The rest of the play, though? Not so much.
This play is only a comedy if you accept the idea that a healthy romantic relationship can be founded on abusive, controlling behavior, and playing domestic violence for laughs only reinforces this as a social norm. This adaptation, a conflation of the two distinct extant texts of this play, The Taming of the Shrew and The Taming of a Shrew, intends to explore the social and dramatic tension of the idea that this story is ostensibly a comedic one. We hope that this adaptation will spark conversations about patriarchal control (which is, at its core, what restricting abortion access is all about), as well as the prevalence of misogynistic humor in the stories that our society continues to tell.

Justice Theatre @ the UUFC is a community theatre venture aimed at staging small-scale productions with pay-what-you-will performances supporting social justice causes. Past beneficiaries have included the ACLU, the Corvallis Cold Weather Mens Shelter, CARDV, and the Mid-Willamette Trans Support Network. Our mission is to create theatre that fosters discussion about the world around us, to make theatre that is completely open and accessible to audience members of any income level, and to use performance to generate donations for good causes.
