"Milk of Amnesia" Re-Premiere Screening and Reception
Milk of Amnesia" is an independent feature film by Laurie Maassen and Jim Sander, produced and shot in Seattle a few years ago. MoA is being presented at this "Re-Premiere" event to bring together cast and crew for the first time in over 25 years. The 95-minute film will be screened in its entirety, preceded by a musical performance by original score co-composer Lori Goldston, and with time for a MOA cast and crew reunion.
Milk of Amnesia is the story of a lost man and the people he meets as he tries to determine his identity from the clues he finds in his possession. Never too serious, maybe a little weird, MoA was shot on Kodak 7231 and 7222 film in a pre-Tech Boom Seattle on the verge of change. Shooting began, October 13, 1991, without a full budget or completed script, shot in glorious 16MM Black and White using borrowed camera gear and lighting, and the skills of some of Seattles most talented crews and actors. Working one or two weekends a month over two years, the strange, misshapen, and ultimately harmless monster, "Milk of Amnesia" was completed and first premiered at the awesome but short-lived Rainy State Film Festival in Seattle in February, 1995.
Retitled "Oedipal Breakfast" after it turned out the title "Milk of Amnesia" had been used already by a short animated film that was released and run at multiple film festivals creating confusions, the film sadly never found a distributor or much of an audience. After playing a few festivals and a short run at the legendary Pike Street Cinema, it became an oddball footnote to Jim and Laurie's life together, its elements stored literally under their staircase. The film was resurrected in late 2019 thanks to many generous donations to a Go Fund Me campaign to secure a new HD transfer, and a Spring, 2020 screening was scheduled. You know the rest! Thank you for joining us!
