The American Chamber Opera Company announces the premieres of Through/In by Douglas Anderson and Simonetta by Larry Lipkis, September 30 & October 1 at 8 PM, at University Settlement House, 184 Eldridge Street.  Both works will be directed by Andrew Joffe, with music direction and conducting by Douglas Anderson.

THROUGH/IN
Music by Douglas Anderson, Libretto by Andrew Joffe
is a monodrama about the differences between the persona we present to the world, and the world we hold inside ourselves.  In this one-woman tour-de-force, performed by Nicole Salamon, the dichotomy is explored through the device of a mirror, as the woman sitting at a make-up table prepares herself physically and emotionally to face what comes next.

SIMONETTA
Music by Larry Lipkis, Libretto by Robert Block
is the story of the artist Sandro Botticelli and his young model and muse Simonetta Vespucci.  When she dies suddenly, Botticelli is heartbroken and becomes prey to the extreme religious views of the Dominican friar Savonarola.  In this four-person chamber opera, composed in a modern lyrical style and incorporating music from the era of Botticelli, the emotional journey of the celebrated artist reveals the timeless themes that span the centuries: the complex relationship of artists to their muses, populism and cultism in society, the voice of a strong woman asserting her beliefs against a patriarchal society and, ultimately, the sanctity and eternal life of art.  Performed by Rachel Arky, Lianne Gennaco, Seth Gilman, and Steven Tompkins.

ABOUT THE COMPOSERS:

DOUGLAS ANDERSON is a composer, conductor, educator, and producer who has been active in the New York area for 45 years.  He studied music and psychology at Columbia University, where his three degrees culminated in a doctorate in music composition in 1980.  His professional career began as a jazz musician at the age of 12, and he performed widely in the Eastern U.S. before moving to New York to attend college.

Dr. Anderson's compositions include chamber works, orchestral works, concerti, solo vocal and choral music, electronic music, radio drama, jazz, film, and musical theater, as well as many choral and instrumental arrangements.  His music has been heard around the world for decades, notably on Voice of America radio abroad, and nationally in radio dramas broadcast on NPR.  His recorded music can be heard on three albums produced by Parma Records: Sparks (Orchestral Miniatures); Douglas Anderson Chamber Operas 2, 3, and 4; and One at a Time (solo works by instruments).

In 1991, Anderson's music was presented in a retrospective concert by the New Renaissance Chamber Artists.  His chamber opera Faust Triumphant was premiered in 1995 at the International Faust Festival, and was revived in a production in 2016 by the American Chamber Opera Company.  In 2009 he was a guest composer at the Bar Harbor Maine Music Festival, and in 2011 was a featured composer on eightstringsandawhistle.com.  For the 2012-13 season he was composer-in-residence for A Potpourri of Song in Brooklyn.

As a conductor, Dr. Anderson is conductor of the Downtown Symphony, Music Director of the Putnam Chorale, Conductor for the Make Music NY Festivals, and Music Director with the American Chamber Opera Company.  He is on the faculty of the BMCC College/CUNY, where he is Professor of Music and was for 14 years Chairman of the Music and Art Department.

Schirmer and J.W. Pepper and have been recorded on the Koch and Music and Arts label.  Lipkis is also a member of the early music ensemble The Baltimore Consort, which specializes in music from the time of Shakespeare.  The group tours nationally and internationally and has made 17 recordings on the Dorian/Sono Luminus label.

THE AMERICAN CHAMBER OPERA COMPANY, Inc., founded in 1983, is internationally recognized for its musically excellent and dramatically powerful performances of chamber operas in English.  The Company has established chamber opera as a significant musical and dramatic genre, and encourages the development of American lyric music by providing a forum for exceptional works of the past, present, and future.
ACO's decades of production illustrate vividly how they have achieved their goals: presenting music by talented and award-winning composers, drama by great writers of the past and present, twenty-six premieres of a wide-ranging variety of important new works, imaginative and innovative programming coupled with excellent musical dramatic performance - all have attracted the acclaim of audiences and critics.
