A Trivial Comedy for Serious People by Oscar Wilde

The Importance of Being Earnest is the most renowned of Oscar Wilde's comedies. It's the story of two bachelors, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff.  Algernon lives in luxury in London.  Jack lives in the country. Jack is known to his friend Algernon as Ernest.   He goes by the name of Ernest when he goes into the city.  When Jack is in the country, he goes by the name Jack, and he lives at an estate where he is responsible for his young ward Cecily. (Cecily is young and pretty and of marrying age.) Algernon who lives in London - has invented an imaginary invalid friend, Bunbury, whom he claims to visit whenever an unappealing social engagement presents itself. When in the country, Jack has also invented a character to get him out of unappealing social events, a wayward younger brother called Ernest.

Jack wants to marry Algernon's cousin Gwendolyn, but must first convince her mother, Lady Bracknell, that he is worthy, and he must prove the respectability of his family line. However, Jack has no parents, in fact he was abandoned in a handbag at Victoria station as an infant, therefore  he can produce no relatives.

Lady Bracknell is the head of the family and will be the one to have the final say on all marriage proposals, and she insists that Jack, certainly won't do, for her daughter, Gwendolyn.  But Gwendolyn is quite interested in marrying Jack, whom she knows only as Ernest, because, as she writes in her diary, she has always secretly wanted to marry someone by the name of Ernest.  It's such a strong and powerful name.  It produces Vibrations.

When Algernon learns of Jacks pretty young ward Cecily, he decides to pay a surprise visit to Cecily in the country, and passes himself off as Jacks wayward younger brother, Ernest. Cecily has always been fascinated by the tales of Ernest's wickedness, and she has also written in her diary of her desire to marry someone by the name of Ernest.  Cecily quickly falls for Algernon, who is pretending to be her Uncle Jack's younger brother, Ernest and agrees to marry him.

When Cecily and Gwendolen meet, they have a genteel stand-off over which of them has a prior claim to Ernest. Lady Bracknell, of course, refuses to let anyone marry without proof that all parties can prove their worthiness.

Also thrown into the mix are Miss Prism, Cecily's prim and proper teacher and Reverend Chasuble, who has a fondness for Miss Prism, and can conveniently perform baptisms, so that he might be able to baptize both gentlemen under the name of Ernest. To follow is a mass confusion over the abandoned baby in the handbag discovered in Victoria Station and a desperate search to learn the importance of being EARNEST.
