Starting Off Strong - A Breastfeeding Intensive for Birth and Health Professionals
Don't miss this excellent opportunity for healthcare professionals to learn what breastfeeding couplets need to start off strong. Are we jumping to supplementation too soon? Discover how we can best protect exclusive breastfeeding when difficulties arise.
Agenda
7:30am: Registration and Breakfast
8:00am-11:30pm: Presentation by Catherine Watson Genna, BS, IBCLC
Catherine will build for us, a coherent picture of how the tongue and oral structures work in normal sucking and show what role tongue movements play in breastfeeding. We'll then dive into practical strategies for health professionals to use to facilitate optimal breastfeeding.
11:30-12:00pm: Lunch
12:00-3:30pm: Catherine Watson Genna continues
Catherine will address the challenging, non-latching infant and offer advanced strategies for helping infants who don't latch. She'll also share evidence to assist health care professionals to differentiate normal versus problematic weight loss to protect both exclusive breastfeeding and infant health.
3:30-4:00pm: Wrap Up/Evaluations/Door Prizes

We will provide a light breakfast, boxed lunch and afternoon snack. Water and coffee will be available all day. You are welcome to bring your own food and beverages, if desired. In addition, there are nearby restaurants and convenience stores.

We have a block of rooms reserved at the Timberlake Hotel for our attendees from out of town. The hotel is located adjacent to the event location, with a walking path between. Our conference rate is $104/night for a king room or $114/night for a double queen room. You must book by 8/23/22 to receive this rate.

This event will consist of 7 continuing education hours.

CME: The AAFP has reviewed Starting Off Strong: Breastfeeding Intensive for Birth and Health Professionals and deemed it acceptable for up to 7.00 Live AAFP Elective credits. Term of Approval is from 09/23/2022 to 09/23/2022. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Catherine Watson Genna, BS, IBCLC
Catherine Watson Genna has been an IBCLC in private practice in NYC since 1992. She has a special interest in the anatomical, genetic and neurological influences on infant sucking skills, and writes and speaks on these topics. Catherines research with Columbia University and Tel Aviv University departments of Biomedical Engineering includes using ultrasound and cervical auscultation to study sucking and suck:swallow coordination in infants with ankyloglossia as well as biomechanical aspects of breastfeeding. She is an avid clinical photographer and the author of Supporting Sucking Skills in Breastfeeding Infants (Jones and Bartlett Publishers, 2016, 2013 and 2008) and Selecting and Using Breastfeeding Tools (Praeclarus Press, 2009). She served as the founding associate editor of Clinical Lactation for its first 7 years.
