Church of Beethoven OP Presents Soprano Josefien Stoppelenburg and Joel Spears
For our February monthly show, Church of Beethoven is very excited to bring back a very talented Dutch soprano Josefien Stoppelenburg along with Joel Spears accompanying on the theorbo in a program featuring early music inspired by the writings of William Shakespeare - such as Romeo and Juliette, Cymbaline, the Tempest and As You Like It among others..
This exciting and unique program will showcase composers from the 16th and 17th century such as some Richard Edwards, Robert Edwards, Henry Purcell and other great lesser known gems.
Tickets are only $15 for general admission, and $10 for students and kids. We are very thrilled that we have our new location for 2022 that will allow us to host safe, socially distant concerts. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is centrally located at 611 Randolph St in Oak Park.
Dutch soprano Josefien Stoppelenburg is best known for her dazzling vocal agility and her passionate and insightful interpretations. Stoppelenburg has performed all over the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America as a Baroque Music and Oratorio specialist, and as a concert singer.
Her appearance on Chicagos classical radio program, Live from WFMT, was selected as one of the 10 best performances in 2016.
Stoppelenburg will be the 2022 Artist-in-Residence at the Boulder Bach Festival (Colorado) and appear with the Arizona Bach Festival, Cincinnati Bach Ensemble, Bach Week Evanston, Bach Society of Dayton and perform Bachs St. John and St. Matthew Passion in the Netherlands.
Josefien recently appeared to great acclaim in "Annelies", an oratorio about Anne Frank by composer James Whitbourn. This English composer praised Stoppelenburg's outstanding performance, stating:
" I have heard many performances, but few so accomplished and so full of understanding as hers."
Stoppelenburg taught Baroque vocal masterclasses at Indiana University (Jacobs School of Music), the University of Colorado, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and Illinois State University and Louisville University School of Music. She has performed for the Dutch Royal family on several occasions. Her new CD 'Modern Muses, contemporary treasures for voice and cello' , with American cellist Jean Hatmaker, was released this Fall by Navona Records.
Stoppelenburg is also a painter. Her colorful art has been used in opera sets, album booklets, fashion, and on music festival posters. She is currently illustrating a childrens book.

Joel Spears began his creative life at 3, when he began drawing and making little illustrated books, inspired by his mother. Later on, he taught himself to play the guitar, first acoustic and then electric. After that he became inspired by the sound and the vast repertoire of the lute, and years later began studying the instrument in all its various forms.
Today Joel is much sought after as a soloist, continuo player, lecturer and teach er. He is a founding member of the ensemble Black Tulip, and has performed with Lyric Opera of Chicago (including on-stage appearances), Chicago Opera Theater, The Marion Consort, SDG Chicago Bach Project, Seraphic Fire, and many more. In addition to producing and playing for numerous live radio broadcasts on 98.7WFMT, he has appeared at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Chicago Cultural Centers Preston Bradley Hall, the Bach Week in Evanston Festival, and the Handel Week Festival. As a lecturer and performer, he has appeared at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Madison Early Music Festival, and as Guest Artist and Lecturer at Grand Valley State University. Joel is currently Lute Instructor at the Music Institute of Chicago, and Artistic Director of The Early Music Series at the Byron Colby Barn in Grayslake, Illinois. He is also the first theorbo and baroque guitar teacher in the nation at the high school level, teaching at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, IL.
