The Surrealist Cabaret 2020
For obvious reasons, the performers of The Royal Frog Ballet wont be flying from all corners of the country to smoosh hundreds of audience members as close together as possible for their live annual outdoor event in the fall-dappled fields of Massachusetts. But fret not! The collectives mystical and wacky extravaganza is instead being squashed into an envelope and sent directly to doorsteps. From there, The Surrealist Cabaret will unfurl its magical tendrils to delight, thrill, invoke, and invite you to join in from the land where you live. We will miss your physical presence terribly but are confident weve made something weird, wild, inviting, hopeful, performative, imperfect, full of love and the spirit of our beloved Cabaret.

Traditionally, The Surrealist Cabaret has been an outdoor performance and installation event that walks the audience through farmland where they encounter a surreal collection of short stories, dance, installation pieces, and roving characters that explore and celebrate themes of season, place, and what it means to be human in these times. As we do each year, artists in the collective have created  individual acts based on a common theme and woven them together to create a bizarre and brilliant smorgasbord of style, aesthetic, and metaphor, but this time the work is coming to audiences in a more intimate approach. A book filled with writing, imagery and recipes for delight will arrive in mailboxes. Included will be portals to video components to enjoy with popcorn, an audio file to take a sunset walk with, and more, mysterious invitations.

To attend The Surrealist Cabaret youll need access to a mailing address and computer and/or smartphone.  A single book will be mailed to the address of your choice for your household to share (unless you purchase tickets separately, in which case you will receive multiple copies of the same book).  Additional recommended materials to gather for maximum delight include: headphones, good walking shoes, a cozy and fabulous outfit, a dash of dazzle, a safely distanced buddy or family member, and whatever you call art supplies these days (egg cartons, stuff you found in the back of the closet).

With this mystical entry point for further fun in hand, audience members will be invited to make a date with a piece of land that they have access to, however big or small and off we go, together and distant.

QUICK NOTE BEFORE YOU BUY A TICKET

Each household that shares an address will receive a single book (which serves as the portal to the rest of the experience). If members of your household would like to receive more than one book you should purchase tickets separately so that we know to ship more than one book to a single address. Thanks!

Additionally, this year we are asking folks who attend The Cabaret to make a contribution to a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) land or performance project in your area as part of your ticket purchasing.

If you are in a financial position to do so, we encourage you to match (or more!) your ticket purchase with a contribution.  This would mean: If you buy $100 worth of tickets to The Surrealist Cabaret, we ask that you also give $100 to a BIPOC-led land or performance project.

Stumped about where to start? Visit our website to see the list of fabulous projects we encourage you to contribute towards.

Our dream is that the amount redistributed via these contributions matches that of our total ticket sales.

SLIDING SCALE TICKETS
We are introducing broader sliding-scale ticket pricing (link to sliding scale) this year in continuation of our commitment to increasing economic accessibility to the arts, and further, to encourage a generous redistribution of wealth as a collective action for us all to engage in as part of this Cabaret.

When deciding where you fall on the sliding scale, please factor in the addition of a contribution to an organization if you are financially able. In alignment with the movement for reparations, there is no expectation for BIPOC folks to make a matching donation, unless you feel moved to do so.

Thanks so much in advance for your generosity and companionship in this effort, and for joining us in the slow and awkward work of creating new models for the systems that serve us all! We want you to feel empowered in deciding what a meaningful, doable, and generous allotment means to you in the general context of your income, background, and in the unusual circumstances of this year.

Let us shout it from the rooftops: We want you to receive the joy of this art! So please choose the option that creates maximum joy for you and joy for others! Please visit our website for more information about how we created our sliding scale and some tips for figuring out where you fall on it in case you are mystified by this process!

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
We want to actively participate in creating and normalizing new systems of thought around how money is spent, and who that supports.

As a group of white artists (in this  years current iteration of our collective) we want to to use our platform to support the survival and thriving of BIPOC people

We are committed to creating accessibility in many forms to this project, including but not limited to the financial access to the experience of art.

We are entirely funded by our ticket sales. We receive no outside funding, sponsorship, grants, or donations. We believe this holds us most accountable to our work and to our audience.

We are grateful for the work of many in creating language and strategic thinking around these systems of finance. We have drawn from the work of the following groups in creating our version  including Linke Fligl, Worts and Cunning, and AWARE-LA.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ENTHUSIASM FOR OUR WORK AND FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN CREATING SYSTEMIC CHANGE!
