Overview:
The benefits of play and STEAM extends beyond preschool. A play-based, STEAM learning environment allows children to make the connection between the concepts learned at home, in nature, and in class and how those concepts apply to the real-world in which they live.
This 3-part series focuses on how you can implement, integrate, and foster children's STEAM identity through collaboration, communication, research, problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity from Preschool to Grade 3 (P-3).
These session builds upon each other. We advise you to attend all three if possible.
Workshop #1 Wednesday, Aug 5th, 2020 Brain Building in Progress: STEAM Education & Play
In this session, well lay the foundation of STEAM, Inquiry-based, and play-based learning. Well argue for why play is important for learning and development in the early years, how learning happens through play (problem-solving, analytical, negotiating different points of view), ways you can engage children in play (open-ended play, guided play with adults scaffolding in learning, games with set rules, and direct instructions), address misconceptions about play and learning, and suggest ways we can train educators on the value of play.
Workshop #2 Wednesday, Aug 12th, 2020 Plan for Inquiry: Integrating STEAM Play into Your Curriculum
Looking through 4 lens individual appropriateness, age appropriateness, cultural appropriateness, and the meaningfulness to the child, this session will focus on ways we can plan, implement, and deliver stimulating curriculum and materials that respond to the various cultural contexts of our children in our community. Building off of the foundations of STEAM and Play-Based Learning foundational workshop the week prior, well provide ideas for integrating playful learning into preschool and school aged programs across various contexts.
Workshop #3 Wednesday, Aug 19th, 2020 Engaged Play: STEAM Skills in Everyday Life
In this session, well walk through ways parents, guardians, and community members can stimulate child development through their nurturing care, conversation and storytelling, and by teaching life skills and providing time and materials for enriched play. This workshop will help bring attention to what children can learn through playful activities, strengthen families understanding of the value of play, and simple ways families and communities can contribute resources and materials to facilitate play experiences.
Participants will see examples from KidsQuest Children's Museum (Bellevue, WA), a museum anchored in science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) that fosters 21st century skills of communication, critical thinking, authentic problem solving, creativity, and innovation.
Why I Should Attend:
Even though STEAM learning is associated with science and mathematics, integrating other disciplines - such as language arts and social sciences - enables students to see that real-world problems are interdisciplinary.
Science encourages investigation and answering questions, often involving experimentation.
Technology refers to using simple tools like crayons and rulers, as well as more complex ones like microscopes and computers.
Engineering refers to recognizing problems and testing solutions.
Arts encourage creativity and allow children to illustrate concepts they are learning.
Mathematics deals with numbers, but also patterns, shapes, organizational skills and much more.STEM learning is the exploration of these problems using hands-on experimentation and iterative inquiry-based techniques.
Play ties all of this together in the classroom through hands-on activities that nurtures STEAM skills and concepts early on and build on them through ongoing opportunities for play and discussion.
