CANCELED: McCall SummerFest 2020: Barbara Morgan & Beethoven
After much deliberation and consideration, McCall Music Society has made the difficult decision to cancel SummerFest 2020, originally scheduled for July 12-18, due to the ongoing efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19. A McCall, Idaho tradition since 2012, this week-long festival of classical and pops orchestra concerts will resume in 2021 with Boise Philharmonic Music Director, Eric Garcia, at the helm as Artistic Director and Conductor.

"I am deeply saddened that SummerFest 2020 has been cancelled," Eric Garcia said, adding, "Our incredible orchestra, illustrious guest performers, and I will miss making music for this wonderful community. However, out of the deepest concern for the safety and well-being of our patrons, musicians and board, this was the only option. We look forward to reuniting in 2021."

According to Richard Surbeck, McCall Music Society president, "The Board of Directors remains committed to bringing great music to McCall and we will work to offer new events to our town at a more appropriate time."

Please check back for our 2021 plans!

The final orchestra concert in the series will open with Beethoven's Symphony No.2 in D major, Op. 36. Then, McCall will take special pride in the performance of Gustav Holst's The Planets, selections of which will be interspersed with astronaut and former McCall schoolteacher Barbara Morgan's narrated guide through the solar system, accompanied by stunning NASA photography. It will be an evening to remember!

Barbara Morgan
Barbara Morgan, former elementary school teacher in McCall, Idaho, was selected to serve as back-up to Teacher in Space Christa McAuliffe in 1985, and trained with the crew of the space shuttle Challenger. After the Challenger accident, Barbara returned to the classroom and continued working for NASA's education division until 1998 when she was selected as an astronaut, the first educator to become an astronaut. In August 2007, she served on the crew of mission STS-118 and flew on the space shuttle Endeavour to help construct the International Space Station.

Barbara joined Boise State University in 2008 after a 10-year career as a NASA astronaut and 24 years as a public school teacher. She taught in McCall for 22 years; in Quito, Ecuador; and on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana. As a member of Boise State's Division of Research and Economic Development, she represented the university and provided vision and leadership to the State of Idaho, primarily in STEM education. Her work included policy and program development, advocacy and mentoring. She used her experience as a classroom teacher and NASA astronaut to initiate and cultivate university and K-12 opportunities, locally and nationally. She is Distinguished Educator in Residence, Emeritus, Boise State University.
