PGM 9 - Bronx World Film Cycle, Winter 2020
TLACUILOS (SCR/DIR Federico Peixoto, COSTA RICA, 2019, color, 85:00. Documentary DJ/Hip Hop artist Peixoto filmed this epic over twenty years in eight different countries. The first Central American film with a simultaneous region-wide commercial release (September 2019), it is a living history of the movements evolution and slow acceptance as an art form. Every frame speaks to the regions vast cultural differences despite its small size, whether in the strains of vernacular, the lyrics, the cosmopolitan hybrid styles or the ties to ancestral Maya culture. The rebellious, creative generation of today in fact bear more than a passing resemblance to the tlacuilos, or Maya visual chroniclers. (In Spanish, with English subtitles. US premiere.)

DIASPORA (SCR/DIR Irem Gülen Akgun, TURKEY, 2018, color, 09:06. Drama, animation). It's a film of a circle stuck in cornered world and its journey to fit in. (US Premiere)

SENDERS SCR/Edgard Vásquez DIR/Omar Cubías, EL SALVADOR, 2019, color, 12:30. Drama.) As he runs his mailman route, Fermín suffers a small accident with some letters. He has to contact one of the recipients  to tell her about the problem. Thus he meets Marcelina, a lonely old woman who has long yearned for the arrival of news. (NYC premiere)

STILL LIVES (SCR/DIR Elli Vuorinen, FINLAND, 2019, color, 6:00. Stop-motion animation.) Traditional figurines from folk art from various times and places accompanied by a soundtrack of narrators facing the pressures of modern life, these characters explore the theme of busy stillness from different points of view in seven separate scenes: a couple on an antique bridal box breaks up, turning into tinder; an ancient statue in a glass showcase grows tired of hearing about the dynamic potential of shared workspaces, and the runner on a clay jar is stuck in a never-ending workout session. (US premiere. In Japanese, Arabic, French, English and Finnish)
