JENNIFER HARDAWAY, harmony goddess & songwriters muse, serial entrepreneur & Japanese television star and MARK SMITH master of the Martin D28, OG/OC/SB, serial abuser of wooden instruments w/6 or more strings and MATTHEW MARS poet, lyricist, Sunday School refugee and prime instigator...
...as The Clear, originally formed in 1994, extant through the Year 2000, made three and a half records -Refrain, The Easter Session, Living at the Movies, Iglesia Universal-released two of them, two and a half, perhaps, developed and sustained a devoted cult of followers, and played at the edges of both the mainstream and the big time, as it were, for most of its brief existence, gaining critical acclaim if not critical mass, as the band added & subtracted musicians based on individual songs and what they may or may not have required in texture, color, feel. These very fine musicians included at various times on various stages and in various studios the likes of Steve Hunter, Andrew Bush, Miiko Watanabe, Brian Mastalski, Wendie Colter, Gersh, Michael Barsimanto, Dan Morris, Pete Maloney, Abraham Laboriel, Jr., Rafael Gayol, Todd Sickafoose, Michael Tempo, Rich Mangicaro, Dutch Klees, Martin Tillmann, Kathrin Shorr, Howard Greene, Ruben Ramos, Barry Wood, Kara Jenkins, Cliff Ulrich, Kira Arrillaga, Casey Arrillaga, Lis Lewis, Aaron Knapp, Fernando Saunders, Valerie Mora, Steve Kruse, Guenevere Meecham, but always remained at the very core Ms. Hardaway and the Mssrs., Smith & Mars, and it is in that bare bones, world weary and seen it all but ready to busk & bluff & bluster through yet another evening full of song, version of themselves that they return, a mere 20 years later, harmonies ever deeper, guitars not quite opaque but not translucent either. We figured, apparently, after all this time that a) everything old is new again, b) we had something yet to say, to each other, to our audience, to the big bad world, and that in mind, we invite you to join us in our most embryonic stage (if any embryo can be said to have already made three and a half records) as we start our engines yet again...
