Profs & Pints: Understanding the Youth Climate Movement
Profs and Pints presents: "Understanding the Youth Climate Movement," with Dana R. Fisher, professor of sociology at the University of Maryland, director of its Program for Society and the Environment, and author of American Resistance: From the Women's March to the Blue Wave.

College students and teenagers have become a major force demanding efforts to halt climate change. Come gain an in-depth understanding of the youth climate movement, its organizers and motivators, and is targets and tactics from a scholar of environmentalism and recent social movements.

Having followed the youth climate movement and interviewed and surveyed many of those involved, Professor Fisher is distinctly qualified to discuss the people involved with the movement, the obstacles it faces, and its prospects for success. Shell describe how the tactic of skipping schools on Fridays to protest inaction on climate policymaking has spread across the United States and around the world, and how young people were heavily represented among the more than 7 million who participated in coordinated strikes last September. Many of the young people attracted to the climate movement cut their teeth in the anti-Trump resistance movement, and about three-fourths of them will be eligible to vote in 2020.

The talk will give you a sophisticated perspective on the relationship between environmentalism and democracy. Drawing from research the youth climate movement along with research for her new book, American Resistance, Dr. Fisher will frame the youth climate movement in the context of the current movement of heightened activism and civic engagement in America.

Dr. Fisher speaks and writes regularly about activism, democracy, and environmental policy, and has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, PBS Newshour, and various NPR programs to discuss her work. Regardless of the weather, you'll be glad you came out to hear what she has to say. (Advance tickets: $12. Doors: $15. Save $2 with student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.
