The Voice is a Wild Thing: Sound Circle 25th Anniversary Solstice Concert
Sound Circles 25th Anniversary Solstice Concert takes its title from a line in one of Willa Cather's novels. "The Voice is a Wild Thing" has been a mantra for Sound Circle from the very beginning, appearing on our first T-shirts. This 25th Anniversary concert celebrates that core mantra, with its messages of authentic voice, empowered presence, creativity, and joy. This elegant and strong Solstice concert celebrates the supportive role of darkness as a foundation for personal power, understanding personal power to be about one's participation in the life of the society as well as about one's individual life path.

In an exquisite setting of David Whyte's "Sweet Darkness" by Denver composer Terry Schlenker, we sing: Sometimes it takes darkness and the sweet confinement of your aloneness to learn anything or anyone that does not bring you alive is too small for you. In Gary Grundei's tour de force setting of Diane DiPrimas "Rant," we sing, "Bring yourself home to yourself. Enter the garden...the only war that matters is the war against the imagination." The program includes numerous works commissioned and arranged by Sound Circle.

Sound Circle's Solstice concerts are always about paying attention, with a fresh eye and ear, to the natural world and particularly to the passage through darkness at this moment in our annual cycle; they are non-religious celebrations of the Solstice season. The concerts will take place in the intimate and warm acoustics of Unity Columbine Spiritual Center.

Concerts will run 75 minutes without intermission. We say these concerts are "not for children," by which we mean audience members should be happy about sitting peacefully and listening with rapt attention for 75 minutes. We look forward to sharing moments of stillness and quiet beauty with you.

Sound Circle is a 18-voice women's a cappella ensemble directed by Sue Coffee. Based in Boulder, Colorado, Sound Circle has operated since 1994 with the simplest of missions: "We have come together to experience the deep joy of making music together and to share that joy with our audiences." Please join us.
