Mary Zimmermans extravagant theatrical reimaginings of classic lore and fairy tales have enlivened stages across the country. Previously Cornish has produced her plays Argonautika and Arabian Nights.
According to an interview with Zimmerman in Playbill, The Secret in the Wings combines several European fairy tales ("elements from Beauty and the Beast with four lesser-known stories") in a new unique theatrical staging for grownups (and "our collective childhood subconscious").
In The Secret in the Wings, Zimmerman theatricalizes a number of relatively obscure fairy tales to create a play that contrasts their unsettling events with moments of revelatory humor. Through a frame tale in which a child has to contend with a somewhat frightening child-sitter (Hes got a tail! she tells her oblivious parents) the play segues from tail to tales into a sequence stories, that interrupt each other as the suspense builds to the inevitable resolution.
Mary Zimmerman is a resident playwright and director as an ensemble member of Chicagos Lookingglass Theatre Company. She has won numerous awards for her writing and directing, including the 2002 Tony Award. She is also a Professor of Performance Studies at Northwestern University. "I've always loved fairy tales," stated Zimmerman. "I think they perhaps led me to theatre rather than the other way around. As a child I wanted to invent a machine that could record my dreams, so I could watch them in the morning; or hire someone to draw the things I had in my head because I knew I didnt have the skill to do it myself. Theatre is that machine. I can make these images come to life and actually walk around inside them for a while.
Marc Kenison has directed several previous productions at Cornish including the Second Year capstone presentation Above the Fruitless Plain and the junior versions of musicals Xanadu and James and the Giant Peach. Marc has also taught physical technique, improvisation and solo performance at Cornish. He is also known far and wide as boylesque cabaret superstar Waxie Moon.
