A Beautiful Day in November on the Banks of the Greatest of the Great Lakes by Kate Benson | Directed by Michael Place

A family gathers for a ritual dinner which is also a sporting event. Stage Raw called it  a comic holiday card with a black border. Its a frosty-green punch-drunk treatment of a large familys Thanksgiving dinner, hosted by sisters named Cheesecake, Cherry Pie and Trifle. And the events of this gathering are mediated for the audience by two sportscasters.

Theatermanias review of the plays NY production calls it  a style of wild absurdism that has all but died out in favor of conventional four-person shows, and says the playwright expertly subverts our expectations of gender roles as she takes a world traditionally thought of as feminine (the cooking of a large holiday meal) and places it in a male-dominated idiom of sports. And despite a pleasing lack of preciousness, Benson still manages to find an unexpected tenderness.

Kate Benson is a writer and actor living in Brooklyn. Her plays include A Beautiful Day in November, [PORTO]  which starred Theater alum Julia Sirna-Frest in the title role, Lee Miller, and Radium Now. She is a graduate of the Brooklyn College MFA Playwriting program. She has had readings and showings of her work at Dixon Place, 13th St. Theater, Jimmys No. 43, and the Room at New Georges. Kate Benson received Special Citation at the  2015 Obie Awards for the original production of A Beautiful Day in November on the Banks of the Greatest of the Great Lakes.

Michael Place directed last seasons production of Love and Information in the Cornish Playhouse, and has previously directed Achilles in Sparta and O Beautiful at Cornish. He teaches physical technique classes in the first through third years. Michael is also the Founding Artistic Curator of Seattle-based new play development organization One Coast Collaboration.
