CCO: song | sky
CCO begins its 10th Anniversary season with a world premiere, Let Me Sing, from Chicago-based composer Eric Malmquist. Guest soprano Ariana Strahl will be featured performing a song cycle inspired by the works of Djuna Barnes, Sara Teasdale and Frances Harper. Other works by Christopher Cerrone, Mara Gibson and Brandon Harrington.
Eric Malmquist - Let Me Sing Let Me Sing captures the voices of historic female American poets in a song cycle for orchestra and soprano, featuring Ariana Strahl.
Mara Gibson - Secret Sky Secret Sky, depicts the migrations and songs of birds; it is anchored by the words of Rumi: This is love: to fly toward a secret sky, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment. First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet.
Brandon Harrington - Rest Rest speaks to the final moments before and after the passing of his grandfather.
Cristopher Cerrone - Will There Be Singing? Cerrones dark political work is inspired by lines from Bertolt Brecht:
In the dark times Will there also be singing? Yes, there will also be singing. About the dark times.
Pre-concert talk with the composers at 6:30pm.
