APPALACHIAN CHAMBER FOLK: Rounder Songs | fivebyfive | The Early Mays
A one of a kind evening of music rooted in American old-time tradition featuring award-winning folk trio The Early Mays, innovative chamber ensemble fivebyfive from Rochester, NY, the immersive artwork of Joanne Wiggins and the compositions of Patrick Burke and Emily Pinkerton.

From Mountain Stage to major folk festivals, THE EARLY MAYS sing Appalachian-inspired songs over a lush accompaniment of fiddle, banjo, guitar, cello and harmonium. They burst on to the folk scene in 2014 with a #2 debut on the National Folk-DJ Charts: an eponymous album that showcased heart-melting harmony vocals. Most recently, they took home the blue ribbon in the Neo-Traditional Band Competition at Clifftop 2016 (The Appalachian String Band Music Festival), appeared on NPR's Mountain Stage in 2017, and hit the #1 position on the folk charts with their latest release, "Chase the Sun." FIVEBYFIVE is a NY-based quintet with a mission to engage audiences in the collaborative spirit and creativity of modern chamber music by commissioning, arranging and performing a wide range of works for its instrumentation. The group performs works of todays leading composers, supports emerging composers from around the world, and collaborates with artists across the disciplines. Through its workshops and educational concerts fivebyfive aims to spark young peoples unlimited creative potential. The winner of the 2018 Eastman/ArtistShare New Artist Program for its commissioning project for new works inspired by the stained-glass artist Judith Schaechter, fivebyfive also has received funding from New Music USA, the Decentralization Grant of New York State, the Rochester Community Foundation and the Farash Foundation. ROUNDER SONGS is a song cycle for voice, banjo and chamber ensemble that brings together the sounds of 21st century post-minimalist classical music and North American old-time. The work is based on public domain songs from Kentucky and West Virginia that tell the stories of rounders: rural drifters who include a gambler, a murderer, and a mill laborer who strikes a deal with the devil. Conceived and composed by Pinkerton and Burke (who are also a married couple) to focus on the common ground between their musical styles -- hypnotic, pulsing rhythms, subtle melodic variation over time, and perhaps most of all, the vivid evocation of certain moods. JOANNE WIGGINS is a mixed media artist living and working in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Through project-based capsules of work, she explores subjects and ideas inspired by music, memory, writing, private space, observations, and interactions in the world around her. Personal imagery inevitably threads itself through each project. These include birds, plants, and the figure, among others. Decorative pattern for texture and image support also play a prominent role. Moving panoramas, also known as Crankies, allow her to step into the performing world while using her love of two-dimensional visual art. She received a BFA from The Atlanta College of Art, a MFA from Washington University, and is a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh. Exhibitions include The Andy Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh, PA), The Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh, PA), and the Universidad Nacional de San Augustin de Arequipa (Arequipa, Peru), among others.
