Join us as we present two British masterworks inspired in part by the revival of the Renaissance polyphonic style of such composers as Thomas Tallis and William Byrd. Ralph Vaughan Williamss beautiful Mass in G minor is written in a modal style that evokes the past, while Herbert Howellss sublime Requiem employs impressionistic sonorities to achieve its overwhelming emotional effect. These two works, like those of their predecessors, envelop the listener in a unique sound world shaped by the pure choral timbre that reverberated through the soaring architecture of Britains many cathedrals and chapels.
