About the Choreographers Showcase
Since 1997, SpectorDance has presented choreographers and dance companies from all over the state and nation right here on the Monterey Peninsula and we are proud to share this unique event with our community. We value the creativity and vitality of dance as a contemporary art form. The Choreographers Showcase provides performance space for emerging and established artists to present their work, and introduces local audiences to cutting-edge choreography, usually only available in metro areas like San Francisco and San Jose.
The Sadie-Rose Residency Program provides one week of rehearsal space for selected choreographers. This summer, Rachel Roman, is our Sadie Rode recipient. Rachel will present a work set on SpectorDance students at the Showcase.
Guests Artist Classes are a wonderful way for local dancers to engage with up-and-coming artists and experience new styles. Commonly only offered in big cities, we are excited to bring L.A. based dancers, Norma Ann Taitano Phillips and Junji Dezaki (The Searchers) to SpectorDance for a contemporary class on Friday, August 2nd. Artist Biographies
Francesca Cipponeri, as a dancer and choreographer, is consistently inspired by the beauty and struggle of humanity and is passionate about telling the human story and capturing seemingly insignificant moments of life through artistry. She believes that artists, as a community, have a responsibility to contribute to the conversations happening in our world and shed light into confusing and difficult situations. Currently, Francesca is investigating the intersection of injustice in human trafficking, the power of community, dance, and cross medium collaboration. She hopes to impact contemporary society by being an artistic voice for those who have been historically silenced.
Sean Greene began dancing at age 19 at Pierce Junior College and has being teaching at Chapman University since 1995. As Principal Dancer and Master Teacher with Bella Lewitzky Dance Company, he danced and taught worldwide for 19 years, appearing on the cover of Dance Magazine in 1978. Beginning in 1988, Sean directed Transitions Dance Company and the Advanced Performance Course at the Laban Centre, London for 5 years and served as Rehearsal Director for the Phoenix Dance Company in Leeds. He has been nominated for two Lester Horton Awards: The Lifetime Teaching Award in 2003, and in 2004 for his original work, La Famiglia del Inferno. Sean also directed, choreographed, and danced for Gallimaufry and Greene, which completed 30 performances in 31 days at the 2008 Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 2014, Sean launched into a new phase of his professional career, creating Sean Greenes Shield Wall, a small ensemble dance company, which had its premiere concert in March 2016. He has taught at Chapman University since 1995.
Jonathan Lipow holds a PhD in Agricultural and Natural Resource Economics from the UC Berkeley, is a professor at the Defense Resources Management Institute at the Naval Postgraduate School, and recently published his first book, Survival: The Economic Foundations of American National Security (Lexington Books, 2016).
His passion for dance started as an undergraduate UC Los Angeles, when he stumbled upon a workshop by Alvin Nikolais. Mesmerized by the movement, Jonathon began studying intensively, primarily with Gloria Bowen (Ballet), Charles Edmonson (Modern), Margolit Marshall (Ethnic), and Marion Scott (choreography). After graduation, he joined the military and lost the opportunity to pursue dance professionally, but always retained an interest in and love of the art form. After a thirty year hiatus, Jonathon recently began dancing and choreographing again at Monterey Peninsula College, studying with Deanna Ross and Jared Lee Phillips.
Melissa Kamnikar is three years new to the dance community and has loved every hour of it. With a background in acting, she joined Monterey Peninsula Colleges dance department in 2017 to expand her performance opportunities and fell in love with the human bodys capabilities. Modern and Ballet dance classes have become a great outlet for Melissa, expanding her physical strength and mental determination, while introducing her to the immense support system found among the dance community. Melissa would like to thank Jonathan and Deanna for their immense encouragement to pursue her solo, A Message for All of Humanity.
Sarah McCormick received her BA in World Arts & Culture from UCLA and her MFA from SUNY Brockport. She has been the Associate Professor of Dance Education at The University of Tennessee at Martin since 2008. Her choreography embodies a world-dance approach combing Western modern dance and ballet training with explorations in Indian, Balinese, Japanese, and African movements. From 1988-1995, her company, Tyndale/Sarah Pogostin, produced works in New York and abroad in such venues as Dance Space, Inc., Movement Research, DIA Art Foundation, Cunningham Studio, St. Marks Church and DTW, in as well as venues in Barcelona and Vienna. McCormicks work has been featured at various universities and festivals such as Alabama Dance Festival, Tennessee Association of Dance, IMS Festival in Rochester, and Bates Summer Dance Festival. She has performed and presented papers at various conferences: National Dance Education Organization, Conference on Research in Dance, National Womens Studies Organization, UTM 2018 Women Studies Symposium, Tennessee Arts Commission, and Tennessee Association of Health, Performance, Exercise, and Dance, and has published a textbook: Understanding Dance: Different Ways of Seeing, Feeling, and Sensing Dance.
Cherrie Paghasian is a Monterey High School and SpectorDance student, where she trains in a myriad of dance styles from ballet to hip-hop, though she especially enjoys commercial dance. Cherrie is highly involved in Monterey Highs dance program, where she has performed and choreographed numerous solo and group pieces and serves as dance team co-captain and vice president. Cherrie also takes dance classes at Monterey Peninsula College, is the youngest choreographer to present at the colleges annual Spring Dance Concert, and volunteers as a dance teacher for the Boy's and Girl's Club of Seaside. Cherrie's ultimate goal is to inspire more young people to dance and use dance as a source of creativity and self-expression
César R. Degollado has worked as a dancer with well-known choreographers and performed renowned choreography by George Balanchine, Anthony Tudor, Paul Taylor and Ben Stevenson. He worked with Ballet Tucson for seventeen seasons, where he danced and also shared the roles of Rehearsal Assistant, Ballet Master and Régisseur. His choreography has been performed by regional, national, and international dance companies as well as at universities and operas. César has taught across the U.S. and internationally, with many of his students going onto Youth America Grand Prix, Grand Prix of Lausanne, Juilliard and other prestigious universities and professional ballet companies. Recently, César founded ConDanza, which will perform his work, Juicy Tart. I have learned to draw inspiration from all other art forms and find stimuli in the evolution of movement and fusion of styles. The aesthetic vision of my movement would give the dancer a unique personality, characterized by the fluency, physicality and poetry contained within the work set on dancers. César R. Degollado
Rachel Roman took her first ballet class after watching a performance of The Nutcracker. Over twenty years later, Rachels passion continues to grow every day as she trains the next generation of dancers. Rachel grew up in Kansas City, MO, dancing and performing with the Heart of America Youth Ballet and Kansas City Ballet. Rachel attended the Conservatory of Music and Dance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), where she received her BFA. During this time, Rachel had the privilege of training under many world renowned professors, teachers, choreographers, and repetiteurs. Rachel has performed in ballets such as Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, and The Nutcracker as well as many original choreographic works set at UMKC. Rachel began teaching while living in Kansas City. Since college, Rachel has had the opportunity to perform, teach, and train in other cities such as San Diego, Honolulu, and now, Monterey.
Andi Salazar is a Chilean dancer, choreographer and sociologist living in the Bay Area since 2017 and a MFA in recent graduate from Mills College, earning her MFA. Before moving to the Bay Area, she was the Artistic Director of Kazé Dance Company in Santiago, Chile for eight years. With Kazé, Andi premiered three original full-length works as well as several short pieces, winning local and regional awards. The company's mission was to provide a space of artistic development for professional and non-professional dancers based on the values of inclusion, tolerance, empowerment, and discipline. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education of Chile, Andi and Kazé also developed and operated dance workshops for primary school students in vulnerable schools. Since relocating to the Bay Area, Andrea has had the opportunity to perform with the Emergence Dance Company and Mills College Repertory Dance Company.
Margaret Wingrove is the founder and artistic director of Margaret Wingrove Dance Company (MWDC) as well as a frequent guest choreographer for other dance companies such as Palo Alto Ballet, Berkeley Ballet, San Jose Dance Theater and sjDANCEco. She holds a Bachelors in Dance from San José State University and a Masters from University of San Francisco, trained at San Francisco Ballet, and has performed and studied extensively on both the east and west coasts with modern dancers Paul Sanasardo, Norman Walker and Lucas Hoving. Her original work, Shatterings, created in tribute to her son John, who died of AIDS, appeared at the Timpany Centers A Celebration of Courage and Names Project at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Her works have also been selected to be presented at Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival in Massachusetts, David Howard Showcase in NYC, San Francisco Dance Festival at Herbst Theatre, and seven of her original works have been performed across England. In 1993, Wingrove received the Women of Achievement Award for the Arts and in 1998 was honored by SJSUs School of Music and Dance for her contributions to the field of dance. She was honored as the recipient of Silicon Valley Creates (formally Arts Council of Silicon Valley) 2009 Fellowship Award for Choreography. In 2011, Wingrove celebrated 30 years as Artistic Director of MWDC and, to date, has created 120+ original works for her company.
