Lituolone: An African Music Drama
The Southern African myth of Lituolone tells the ironic story of a chief whose heroic act of rescuing humanity from the belly of a monster caused him to be feared, not only because of his unusual power, but also because of his virgin birth and rapid maturation to adulthood. Having grown weary of regularly escaping death plots, he eventually surrendered himself. After he died, his heart became a bird. Now, for the first time, this compelling myth has been musically dramatized by composer, Africanist ethnographer, and performing artist, William D. Banks, whose unique retelling combines vivid poetry and dynamic characterization set against an ever-shifting harmonic palette rooted in African musical traditions.
