Since January, the United States and other nations have been seeking to oust Venezuelan President Maduro and replace him with National Assembly President Juan Guaidó. So far, however, such efforts have failed to deliver hoped-for democracy, stability, and prosperity. Instead, Venezuelas humanitarian crisis has worsened, its political tensions remain high, and its prospects continue to seem dismal.

What happened, and why? Where does the mess go from here? What will it mean for the U.S.?
