Love Makes a Home: the Life of Rebecca Boone
The Historic Orchard at Altapass celebrates the 250th anniversary of Daniel Boone's first trek through the Cumberland Gap and the 25th anniversary of the Orchard with this historical play based on the life of Rebecca Boone, wife of Daniel Boone. She gave birth to ten children and raised six more besides, and she moved more than 20 times. The play, written and directed by Yancey County's own Kiesa Kay, stars Terra Currie and features a baker's dozen of fiddle tunes from the times played by William Ritter, of Bakersville in Mitchell County.
This historical play, by local author Kiesa Kay, has received wide acclaim in performances at the Orchard at Altapass, the Folk Art Center, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, White Horse Black Mountain, Berea College, and more.
WILLIAM RITTER, a native of Mitchell County, Some of Williams first exposure to the traditional music of the region came through events he attended with his parents, including hearing bluegrass music at the fire departments annual Rhododendron Festival, and hearing fiddler Red Wilson play for dances at Penland School. William wanted to learn, but, since he didnt have an instrument, he set out to make a fiddle. William enrolled in a course at Penland to have access to the wood shop. As he ran into issues with the instrument, William sought out local builder, Ray Dellinger, who would end up becoming a great friend and influence. William continued learning about the local fiddlers and musical families, including Red Wilson, Fiddling Clarence Greene, and the Ledfords. William met his wife, Sarah Ogletree, while in graduate school. William and Sarah perform as a duet, featuring a blend of traditional and original music with harmony vocals and acoustic accompaniment.
TERRA CURRIE, who plays Rebecca Boone, started Theater on Cedar in North Georgia. She has acted with the Montford Park Players and at Asheville Community Theater. Terra lived for a few years at Turtle Island Preserve in Boone, NC, and she works for Mountain Gardens in Burnsville, NC. She and her husband, Paul Feather, have co-authored two books about social responsibility and living with connection to the land. They built a cabin together with their own hands on their farmland in north Georgia, which they operate as a permaculture and sustainable living site with their daughter, Zinnia.
KIESA KAY's historical plays celebrate resilience and strength. Her plays have been performed in Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Colorado.
