Intro to Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) with Nalini Prakash
Movement is the fundamental discourse of the body for dancers and non-dancers. And dancers tend to have a stronger foundational understanding of how physical language can be used to communicate. The vocabulary of this language is organized as aspects of movement in the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System (LBMS). LBMS organizes aspects of movement in terms of Body, Effort, Shape, and Spacecomponents of what is known as Laban Movement Analysis (LMA). Using these four aspects of movement, dancers build awareness of their movement preferencesin order to communicate more effectively. In particular, the dynamic of effort is inherent to classical Indian dance forms and is integral in how dancers can consider more effective ways to communicate.
In this introductory workshop on LBMS, Nalini Prakash offers insight into ways dance practitioners can further understand how they can be more embodied movers in their practice and performance. In parallel, dance teachers enhance their ability to better train students while considering these aspects of movement.
*Open to dance students in high school or above, adult dancers, and dance teachers.
ABOUT NALINI PRAKASH
Nalini Prakash is Co-Artistic Director of Spilling Ink. She is an acclaimed dancer, choreographer and teacher who has performed throughout India and the United States. Her training primarily took place at Shree Bharatalaya (Chennai), where she studied and performed with its founder and principal dancer, Sudharani Raghupathy. She was awarded a Government of India scholarship in recognition of her talent as a dancer. Nalini was instrumental in establishing and spreading arts education in the Nilgiris region through her school of Bharatanatyam, Silambam, in Coonoor, and also by founding the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Nilgiris Kendra, part of a larger national institute committed to Indian culture, heritage and education. To recognize her efforts in bringing the arts to an underserved area, the Rotary Club of Nilgiris presented Nalini with an Award for Vocational Excellence. Nalini holds a masters degree in dance/movement therapy from Drexel University (Philadelphia), and a masters degree in performing arts from Baroda University. She is also a certified movement analyst and worked for several years as a dance/movement therapist at Saint Elizabeths Hospital (Washington, DC), to enhance the quality of life for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness, while integrating elements of Indian dance and creative movement in her work. Nalini is currently a PhD candidate in the department of creative arts therapies at Drexel University.
