CATCHPENNY by Gerry Ringwald at La Strada Ensemble Theater/Jersey Shore Arts Center
Catchpenny by Gerry Ringwald takes place slightly in the future. John Peterson III, senior partner of a top advertising agency is Chicago, is in merger talks with Steven McCall, a young CEO of a Silicon Valley web tech agency. John feels obsolete and creatively irrelevant. Steven is hungry and arrogant. But both need each other to survive in a rapidly-changing marketplace. Both have secrets. And one of those secrets could have catastrophic effects on events much larger than the proposed merger.
Ringwald, a Chicago resident, wanted to write a play that explored the meaning of the word 'new'. He states: "Is newer always better? What's more important newness or experience and history? And could it be that advertising and marketing has gone beyond just selling us products? Is it possible that advertising and marketing has now been perverted in actual manipulation of our brainwaves. Studies have already proven that extensive exposure to social media triggers responses in the brain. Is that a good thing? He also wanted to explore the topic of ageism. "It's is my belief that ageism is the only socially acceptable form of prejudice. I know a lot of people who are in their mid-fifties who are discarded from places of work because they are deemed too old? A generation or two ago, those people would be invaluable to a firm's success. What does that kind of early termination, when one is still contributing to society, do to one's psyche?"
The performances are Friday March 22 at 8pm, Saturday March 23 at 8pm and Sunday March 24th at 2pm. Jersey Shore Arts Center, 1st floor theater. 66 South Main Street in Ocean Grove.
