8:15 DEMONSTRATION GARDEN TOUR (Orme School) See demonstration garden projects, part of a closed loop food system, including a farm-bot, worm composting, greenhouse w/ swamp cooler run with rainwater, different garden practices, seed saving and more!
9:00 WHATS UNIQUE ABOUT EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY (Sustainability Alliance and Jamie Cloud, The Cloud Institute) Discover if youre teaching all you should to prepare your students for a sustainable future; if not, identify what are you missing.
9:45 BUILDING SUPPORT: HOW TO INCREASE COMMITMENT FOR SUSTAINABILITY EDUCATION AT YOUR SCHOOL (Richard Sidy, Gardens for Humanity) Assess where you and your school are relative to five stages of integrating sustainability into a school. Identify what can move you and your school to the next level.
11:00 TEACHING HABITS OF A SYSTEMS THINKER (Representative of the Waters Foundation) Learn how to use systems thinking tools at all grade levels. Discover how to use the Habits of a Systems Thinker Cards in typical classroom situations, especially those related to sustainability.
12:00 LUNCH Enjoy a buffet of healthy, local food from the Orme kitchen and garden.
12:30 INTEGRATE ONE OF THE BIG 10 CONTENT AREAS INTO YOUR LESSON/UNIT PLAN Sustainabil-ize one of your own lessons/units. Explore 2 of the Big 10 content standards associated with Education for Sustainability (eg, a strong sense of place, responsible citizenship, multiple/multicultural perspectives), that might align with your existing lessons and subject area. Choose one of the content standards that would easily integrate with one of your lessons and figure out how to integrate it. (We encourage you to bring a lesson or unit plan that you want to improveperhaps it already includes sustainability aspects or needs something to engage students more.)
3:15 FUNDING SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS IN SCHOOLS (Erin Cody, Verde Education Center) Identify sources for funding for your sustainability efforts.
4:00 WHATS NEXT FOR YOU? In pairs, explore what your challenges and opportunities are, how to apply what you learned at this Symposium; share strategies and clarify your next steps.
