Profs and Pints presents: Meet the Snow Maiden," a discussion of Russia's beloved winter folktale with folklorist Philippa Rappoport of George Washington University.
Having captivated Profs and Pints audiences with her talks on mermaids and netherworlds, folklorist Philippa Rappoport is back with the perfect talk for the approach of the winter solstice.
In winter Russians transfix their children with the folktale of Snegurochka--the Snow Maiden--a girl made out of snow. Her story has inspired a symphony, a ballet, and elaborate costumes, and is at the center of rituals through which Russian peasants ushered the long winter season in and out of their lives.
Duck into the cozy Bier Baron Tavern to hear Prof. Philippa Rappoport, an expert on Slavic folklore and rituals, tell the tale of the Snow Maiden and of her emergence not just from snow, but traditional Russian culture.
