WINTER SHOWCASE CONCERT A MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO DAVID MASLANKA
Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts - Dan Kryston Theater
San Francisco, CA
Compartir este evento

One of the major symphonists of our time, David Maslanka's challenging works have received performances by ensembles and musicians around the world, but it is widely believed that "his body of work within the band realm glows the brightest."

The student musicians of the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts Band and Orchestra, directed by Henry Hung and Tristan Arnold, will present excerpts from Maslanka's "The Unending Stream of Life" and a "A Child's Garden of Dreams".

Also, as part of this very special musical evening, Asawa SOTA Instrumental Music will host a Spotlight Event, at 6:30 pm on site, and extends the conversation beyond the scheduled performance, offering insight to the programs and people who influence, mentor, and educate our students. Each Spotlight features a special guest at a pre-show discussion. This evening's Spotlight Talk features educator and musician, Jerry Pannone, and is free to the public.

Jerry Pannone has been an active and vivid force in music education and spent his last 25 years as a full time teacher at Ruth Asawa SOTA. Mr. Pannone has received numerous awards for teaching, including the San Francisco Symphonys 2003 Agnes Albert Award for excellence in music education and the 2009 Teacher of the Year Award for California State Senate District 8.

He retired from full time teaching in 2009, but continues to play professionally and is active in judging various school music competitions. He is the Education Director for Harmony Project Bay Area, which brings free after school music classes to underserved elementary school children. He is an active volunteer at Asawa SOTA, coaching National High School Ethics bowl debate teams and also teaches a critical thinking class during the Fall semester.
He got his start playing in a U.S. Army Band in Europe, holds a Masters in Music from San Francisco State and has composed ballets, choral ensemble pieces and numerous works for jazz band and chamber ensembles.
