Antigone
Springfield Theatre Workshop -- the Springfield High School theater group -- presents the classic Greek drama, Antigone, by Jean Anouilh, translated by Lewis Galantiere. The city of Thebes has just survived a civil war in which the two brother-leaders have killed each other in battle. Their uncle, Creon, is now the King of Thebes. He decrees that one of the brothers, Eteocles, should be given a formal burial complete with state honors, while the other brother, Polynices, should be left out in the field of battle to rot. Furthermore, Creon has decreed that anyone caught trying to bury Polynices will be put to death. Antigone, their sister, sets out to bury her brother, putting her on a course that will lead to great passion and pain. Director, Rob Henry, sets the drama in a modern-day office building. This one-act production runs approximately 90 minutes and is performed without an intermission.
