IRVING BERLIN: IN PERSON
From the award-winning playwright/director, Chip Deffaa, and star, Jon Peterson, who gave us the international success "George M. Cohan Tonight!," comes a new one-man show about a legendary songwriter, "IRVING BERLIN: IN PERSON." Performances are Mondays and Tuesdays at 7:30 pm, beginning November 13th, at the historic 13th Street Repertory Theater, 50 W. 13th St., New York City.
You'll hear irresistible Berlin hits like "I Love a Piano," "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "When I Lost You," "Simple Melody," "Say it with Music," "When the Midnight Choo-Choo Leaves for Alabam," "A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody," and more, plus wondrous rarities and rediscoveries. One of the most dynamic song-and-dance men of our times, Jon Peterson, stars in this fast-moving 90-minute show....
With little formal education, Irving Berlin rose from poverty to become the most successful single songwriter in history. He composed more hits--and made more money--than any of his competitors in the Golden Age of Popular Song. He created the scores for 18 Broadway shows and 19 Hollywood musicals--from "Annie Get Your Gun" to "White Christmas"; pure Americana. He gave us more than 1,200 songs. Yet he never learned to write or read music. The great Jon Peterson--fresh from starring in the national tour of "Cabaret"--portrays Berlin, and dances with elan to his own choreography. The peerless Richard Danley provides music direction.

ASCAP award-winner CHIP DEFFAA has written eight published books, 16 published plays, and countless songs and articles. For 18 years, he wrote about entertainment for the New York Post. His musical plays include "The Seven Little Foys," "Theater Boys," "One Night with Fanny Brice," "Mad About the Boy," and the IRNE Award-winning "George M. Cohan Tonight!"
One of the world's foremost authorities on Irving Berlin, Deffaa has written five different shows about Berlin (all of which are available for licensing). He has produced two dozen albums--10 of which deal with Irving Berlin. He wrote this new show expressly for Jon Peterson. Song-and dance master JON PETERSON starred in Chip Deffaa's show "George M. Cohan Tonight!" Off-Broadway in New York City at the Irish Repertory Theater, and has performed that show in countless cities (from New Orleans to Hollywood, from London to Seoul), on-and-off, for more than 10 years. For his portrayal of Cohan, he's been honored by the Drama League, he's been nominated for a Drama Desk Award, and he's won a Bistro Award. Born in England, Peterson studied with the Royal Ballet, and made his mark in musicals on the West End, including "The Sound of Music," "Sophisticated Ladies," and "Cats." In the U.S., he's starred as the Emcee in national tours of "Cabaret," and has covered the role on Broadway. He's starred in solo shows that's he written, such as "Song Man Dance Man" and "He Wrote Good Songs." He may be heard on such albums as "Skidoo," "Irving Berlin Revisited," "Irving Berlin Rediscovered," and the original cast album of "George M. Cohan Tonight!"

Pianist RICHARD DANLEY has been Chip Deffaa's first-call music director for a decade. He has worked on many shows and/or albums of Deffaa's, including "Irving Berlin's America,"
"The Irving Berlin Ragtime Revue," "One Night with Fanny Brice," "The Seven Little Foys," "George M. Cohan Tonight!," "Mad About the Boy," "The Chip Deffaa Songbook," "The Irving Berlin Songbook," and "Theater Boys." Danley has performed everywhere from daytime dramas on television, to cruise ships, to clubs, to Carnegie Hall. He is on the faculty of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA).
