Politics and Prose Presents MATT TAIBBI
Though the New York City Police Department prohibits chokeholds, a chokehold, combined with chest compression and poor health, was the cause of Eric Garner's death on July 17, 2014. Captured on video, Garner's brutal treatment has been witnessed by millions, and his last words, "I can't breathe" - repeated eleven times - became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement. Meanwhile, the officer responsible for killing Garner has never been indicted. Recreating the incident and its aftermath in compelling detail, Matt Taibbi, contributing editor for Rolling Stone and the author of books including THE DIVIDE, tells both Garner's story and that of the NYPD. Revealing new details about the case, Taibbi's meticulous account focuses powerfully on the collision course between one man and the system and reiterates urgent questions about policing and racism.
Taibbi will be in conversation with Wesley Lowery, national correspondent for The Washington Post and author of "THEY CAN'T KILL US ALL."
