Conor McPherson's ST NICHOLAS
"QTC has become the best stage to experience McPhersons plays in the Washington, D.C. area... a tremendous credit to the local theater scene. -- DC Theatre Scene
One of Ireland's most brilliant contemporary playwrights, Conor McPherson, helped establish his reputation with this early play, ST NICHOLAS. The play asks the audience to question whether a Dublin theatre critic really did run into vampires while chasing a young actress in London? The theatre critic is played by Steve Beall, who is ideal for the role having triumphed with other McPherson's plays such as PORT AUTHORITY, THE SEAFARER, and SHINING CITY. Directed by the critically acclaimed Jack Sbarbori, who has specialized in directing the plays of McPherson and Horton Foote.
Per DC Theatre Scene, in McPherson's SHINING CITY Beall delivered "a tour-de-force performance as the haunted widower. Much of the play turns on his extended monologues, especially Scene Three, where the audience comes face to face with the beating heart of the play. Sitting on a couch, slightly hunched over, crossing and uncrossing his legs, gesturing with his hands, gulping down a glass of water, Beall unravels his guilt-stricken discourse, made up of all the recognizable twists and turns of our own lives. His riveting performance is complicated and raw, compassionate and wry."
Chris Klimek reviewed Beall's portrayal of Dermot in McPherson's PORT AUTHORITY as follows "Steve Beall has so much fun with middle-aged Dermots shrugging acceptance of his unaccountable good fortune that when reality comes back to kick him in the stomach as we know it must, it breaks your heart."
November 18 TALK BACK...
There will be an after-play talk back following the 2pm matinee on 18 November with Steve Beall, Jack Sbarbori, and Gerald C. Wood, distinguished professor of English Emeritus from Carson-Newman College. Professor Wood authored "Imagining Mischief," which covers all of McPherson's works in this first publication on the important writer/director McPherson.
