Tea & Conversation with Artist Imin Yeh

Please join us for an intimate artist talk and conversation with Imin Yeh and a proper tea service by Red Blossom Tea.

On display in the 18 Reasons gallery, Imin Yeh's Legend of the PowerAnimal is invested in the productive role of humor and invention in destabilizing the myths that organize how we consume the Other. Play being a venue for criticality, audiences are invited to join in and play with this new mythology in the form of a party.

About her work in general Imin writes: "In my work, object-making is a political space to mediate the roles of labor and consumption. I am interested in how objects define nationhood, specifically in our present anxiety about things "made-in China". Projects meditate upon the exchange of objects and labor that connects American and Chinese histories, cultures, and economies. I want to explore the function of souvenirs in cultural tourism; the relationship between buying and learning. Exploiting the "artist-as-factory", the work begins conversations on cultural fetishism; divisions of labor in global industry; and the aura of authentic, ethnic and handmade as capital. Printmaking's graphic qualities, multiplicity, and folk art heritage, place it at the forefront of many political and commercial campaigns. My work utilizes history, humor, intervention, craft, exchange and generosity."

Moderator Kim Anno, a teacher and artist who exhibits at the Patricia Sweetow Gallery will lead a conversation with all participants about Imin's art and the issues raised by it. Seating is limited to 20, so get your ticket now!
