Facilitated by Hilltop Children's Center faculty
You watch a group of children explore a collection of materials in your classroom. As you listen in, you notice the children continuously returning to a few common themes. You jot down a few notes about what you are seeing, sensing that something important is happening for the children. But where do you go from here? How do you harness the children's curiosity to turn seemingly fleeting interests into several day, or even several week investigations?
In a responsive curriculum model, topics of study emerge directly from the children's play, questions, and interests. Educators act as researchers and facilitators, providing materials, offering guided activities, documenting group work, and making customized plans based on the unfolding development of the exploration.
This workshop will present models and strategies for identifying and extending emerging topics, and will feature stories of several long-term "In-Depth Investigations" from Hilltop's classrooms.
