Examining children's painting work offers educators a simple and powerful way to practice that "close and observant way of being with children." Author and educator Cathy Weisman Topal became intrigued with this topic through her involvement in a painting study conducted by Lella Gandini, U.S. liaison to the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. Cathy will share some of that research, and facilitate a hands on exploration of painting and drawing as tools for deepening our engagement in children's visual artwork.
Cathy Weisman Topal has been a studio art teacher for over twenty-five years at the early childhood center and laboratory school at Smith College in Northampton, MA. She also teaches visual arts education in the Department of Education and Child Study at Smith.
Cathy is the author of: - Beautiful Stuff!: Learning with Found Materials - Children and Painting - Children, Clay and Sculpture - Creative Minds Out of School - Explorations in Art: Kindergarten - Thinking With A Line (interactive computer program and teacher's guide)
