The College of Marin Drama Department presents Tartuffe, by Moliere, directed by W. Allen Taylor
The College of Marin Drama Department will open the 2009/2010 theatrical season with a production of Moliere's great comedy classic, TARTUFFE.  TARTUFFE will be presented in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Kentfield Campus on October 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 and 17 at 8 pm and on October 11 and 18 at 2 pm.  The show will be directed by W. Allen Taylor, who directed last season's outstanding production of Miller's DEATH OF A SALESMAN.

A scathing social satire, TARTUFFE tells the story of the fraud and pious imposter Tartuffe, who insinuates himself into the home of the wealthy but not too bright Orgon, and almost succeeds in marrying Orgon's daughter, seducing his wife and stealing the deed to the family home.  This French masterpiece is one of Moliere's most popular and controversial plays.  The Richard Wilbur translation into English verse is nothing short of a rapid fire rhyming tour de force.

Moliere is one of the giants of French literature.  He abandoned his considerable education in philosophy and law for the theatre where he worked extensively as an actor before he eventually began to write plays.  His work as a playwright is what brought him to the attention of the Sun King, Louis XIV, who was so impressed with his work that he gave him the use of a prominent theatre in Paris.  In its day, TARTUFFE was considered so scandalous that the King banned it from public performance.  The ban continued for five years and several revisions before the king managed to mollify the clergy, at which time it was once again performed publicly to great success - a success that has continued to the present.  Ever the philosopher, Moliere stated, "The duty of comedy is to correct men by amusing them."  Moliere died onstage in 1673 while performing the title role in THE IMAGINARY INVALID, another of his popular plays.

Tickets for TARTUFFE are $15 general and $10 for students and seniors and may be reserved by calling the College of Marin Box Office at 415-485-9385 or online at www.brownpapertickets.com.

Though Tartuffe may be a classic from another time, the wit, humor and biting satire certainly are relevant in the 21st Century.
