Veteran folksinger Dan Berggren and emerging singer-songwriter Alex Smith are united in their passion for songs that grow from the mountains. Their similarities far out-number their 40-year age gap: both were raised in small Adirondack towns, studied at St. Lawrence University, keep a keen ear out for local stories, and write songs that reach far beyond the Blue Line. Both have beautiful resonant voices and a fine touch on the 6-string guitar. They are featured in the PBS documentary on Adirondack music, Songs to Keep. Berggren is a tradition-based songsmith who writes with honesty, humor and a strong sense of place. His songs explore the many dimensions of home, hard working folks, taking care of our planet and each other. The award-winning musician and educator has entertained throughout New York State and overseas in Eastern Europe and Central Africa. Smith is the son of a Long Lake boatbuilder/historian/banjo player. As such he was immersed in folk tradition from birth. Influenced by Canadian folksinger Stan Rogers, Alex's songs speak of proud cultural traditions intersecting with modern times. He has just released his 3rd CD, Hamilton County, on Wepecket Island Records.
