Baking Basics

With this four-hour basics class, Shauna Sever aims to inspire and empower novice bakers. She wants you to be more skillful, save time in the kitchen, and eat more chocolate while doing it!

Shauna has developed a series of building block recipes that can be used in numerous ways. Through this arsenal, she will arm students with classic techniques, as well as reliable hacks and shortcuts that she's tested time and again.

A simple scone can be riffed on in numerous ways, and it lends itself to both sweet and savory.

One cookie recipe to rule them all. A great convertible recipe that can be used in many different ways with a few simple tweaks.

A classic yellow cake, which can be baked as a sheet cake, layer cake or cupcakes.

It should follow: a classic chocolate cake. This is something that should be in every baker's arsenal: easy, versatile, no mixer required.

Chocolate ganache: by changing the ratio of chocolate to cream, you can have everything from truffles to frosting to a silky coating for glazing or dipping.

A foolproof pie crust, suitable for everything from classic apple pies, tarts, quiches, turnovers, and even homemade pop-tarts.

Shauna Sever is a baking expert, cookbook author, food blogger, and food TV host. She's the author of Marshmallow Madness! and Pure Vanilla, and the voice behind the popular baking blog Piece of Cake. Her work has been published in the pages of O Magazine, USA Weekend, Parade, Fine Cooking, Woman's World, and many more. She also owns Bake Sale Bakery, a small-batch dessert catering business. She lives in San Francisco with her husband, their little girl, and baby boy, and is currently at work on her third cookbook, to be released in Spring 2015.
