Rhapsody in Blue
Join Sphere Ensemble, the most innovative string group in the Front Range, as we celebrate our 10th Anniversary Season on Sunday, October 17th at 4:00pm.
Experience Gershwin's beloved Rhapsody in Blue in a new, custom version created by our own Executive Director and violist, Alexander Vittal. Rather than showcasing the original piano soloist, Sphere's arrangement will feature the solo and orchestral lines shared between our thirteen amazing string players in a dazzling reimagining of the original work.
We will also give a unique take on the music of jazz trumpeter and composer extraordinaire Wynton Marsalis. Featuring four contrasting movements from his String Quartet No. 1: At the Octoroon Balls, which "explores the American Creole contradictions and compromises cultural, social, and political exemplified by life in New Orleans."
Following Sphere's tradition of highlighting important voices in pop music, we will also bring to life two completely different songs: Radiohead's inventive, "How to Disappear Completely", with the vocal stylings of our own Artistic Director, Alejandro Gómez Guillén, and the raucous "The Ghost of Stephen Foster" from the brain of Jimbo Mathus and the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Mozart's Adagio and Fugue in C Minor, a superb work written towards the end of his life, will be a chance for Sphere to display our expressive chops.
Come experience Sphere's brand of exciting music-making in a live program spanning centuries and musical styles!
