Overview:
History, false narratives, and stereotypes have all played a part in the exclusion of people of color from outdoor, wild spaces. This seminar explores ways to engage with communities and families to ensure that everyone has access to the wonderful environments this world has to offer. This session will offer tools and solutions for decolonizing outdoor spaces.
Why I Should Attend:
The outdoors are for people of all creeds, countries and colors. Yet, many kids of color are not encouraged to go outdoors because the outdoor world is represented as an elitist one.
The nuances of nature and the outdoors are ones that everyone should get to experience. Nature has the ability to teach us both struggles and pain. Knots and the power of perseverance. Nature has the ability to heal.
In our current society, where youth as a whole do not spend significant time outdoors, and play-based learning is being replaced by standardized testing, we'll spend this half-day session not only furthering our understanding on how stereotypes have prevented urban and children of color from connecting to nature, but we'll also work towards solutions on how we can connect children to outdoor and conservation-related fields in sustainable and developmentally appropriate ways without traumatizing them or their families.

Included in this session is one free admission to the zoo!
Please note: Admission to the zoo is only for that day. No-reentries are allowed. Admission is non-transferable.
Cultural Sharing:
The presenter and Hilltop would like to invite everyone to bring a dish (cultural or anything else) to share since there will be a lot of discussion around cultural sharing and creating spaces to engage community in a more authentic way. Food is usually one of the ways that our community show caretaking and support of each other, and we would like to pass that invitation on to all of those in attendance.
Please note: The Zoo is a nut-free and shell-fish free facility!
About the Presenter
Khavin Debbs (he/him) is the partnership and operations manager at Tiny Trees Preschool in Seattle, WA.
This event is FREE for for all eligible City of Seattle Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL) early learning partners in the Seattle Preschool Program (SPP), the SPP Pathway Program, ECEAP and City of Seattle DEEL Early Learning Staff.
