Overview:

This workshop will focus on recognizing and supporting the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and inquiry skills that children develop and use naturally. After forming a foundational understanding of what early STEM skills and inquiry look like in early childhood, we will look at research that explores how and when math-gender stereotypes form and what we as educators can do about it.

All kids have the capacity and ability to succeed in STEM  its only when our cultural beliefs and biases get in the way that we start to see disparities. Though this research focuses on gender stereotypes, much of the conversation is relevant for countering biases and stereotypes around race, ability, or other facets of identity.

Why I Should Attend:

Rooted in the drive to discover, the need to question, and the ability to create solutions that transform the world around us - STEM and inquiry-based learning is more than asking a student what he / she / they wants to know. Its about triggering curiosity. Curiosity that engages students, builds socio-emotional intelligence, dispel stereotypes, and assists in the elimination of barriers to upward economic mobility.

Join us in this half-day session as we learn of innovative ways we can tap into young kids (0-7) natural curiosity in order to foster an early interest in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Cultural Sharing:

Sharing a meal with someone, eating and drinking together behind the same table  is one of the most important manifestations of sociality in all cultures. Eating together confirms the sense of belonging, being part of a community. The presenter and Hilltop would like to invite everyone to bring a dish (cultural or anything else) to share. As we learn in relationship with each other, sharing culture, knowledge, and information, we hope you will join us in creating and recreating families, friendships, and relationships all in the support and caretaking of our community.

Please note: The location is a nut-free and shell-fish free facility!
